Zafu time

by Connie on August 24, 2008

I am not a Yoga girl.  I think I prefer more aerobic activities, but that doesn’t preclude my taking up that form of exercise in the future.
My niece Lara, on the other hand, takes Yoga to the limit.  She is an instructor – a very good one according to my daughters!  Lara never asks me for anything, so when she mentioned that she was craving a Zafu, and the cost was prohibitive, I immediately agreed to make one.

Make one WHAT?? I had never heard of a Zafu.  Snafu yes! Zafu NO!  Some internet browsing found pics…and even instructions!  A zafu is a meditation cushion, abput 14inches by 8 inches.  According to Wikopedia: Za” (?) means “seat”, and “fu” (?) means cattail.  Historically it was a seat made out of cattails.  Now the filler used is Kapok (fiber from the seed pods of the Kapok tree (naturally!) or Buckwheat hulls.   Now to source some Buckwheat hulls or kapok.

See Lara- I didn’t forget!

Try checking with your local futon store, especially if they make their products on site — they may be able to sell you some kapok or buckwheat hulls, which they probably use as pillow fill.

Okay, I do do yoga, but I’ve never heard of this either. I’ll have ask my yoga instructor about it. He teaches more than one form, but I take Power Yoga. Ten years ago, I probably would have scoffed at any for also, but I think you might enjoythis form of it. Acutally, it’d be a little hard to jump into a Power Yoga class, but I definitely feel that as we age, yoga is important to keep ourselves stretched, and flexible. Oh, and BTW, I do spinning, step, and circuit training also. Cross trainig covers all my bases and keeps me from getting bored, but it DOES prevent me from being able to reach my full potential in yoga. Oh well.

Neat seeing/shopping with you today … will we ever get together without buying something? Try a feed store or other aggie source for the buckwheat maybe? Health food suppliers?

I don’t yoga, but I do a fusion class of Tai chi, yoga and pilates at the gym where I work. Really great class to end my week with, especially when I have sessions with my trainer before hand!
